About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, Does the 72 hour exemption apply to the following? U.S. citizen traveling with US passport.

Depart United States to Taipei. Stay in Taipei for 2 nights. Depart Taipei for Shanghai. Stay in Shanghai for less than 72 hours. Depart Shanghai for the United States. Thank you!

This route is ok. However, you should make sure that your flights won't stop by any other cities in Chinese mainland.
