do I need a visa if I'm traveling from the u.s to shanghai for 3 days?

Jason, whether you need it is decided by your travel route. If you travel all the way by air, only transiting in one Chinese city, and fly to a third country/region after the transit, then you don't need it. Otherwise, you need to apply for one in advance.0
