About:Bao'en Temple Pagoda

I have a work visa but I'm going to work at a new job

Hello, my named is Johnny and I'm an American working in Guangzhou and my Z type expires January 15. I will be moving to a new city and signing a new contract with a different school. What is the process for getting a new Z type? Do I have to leave the country? Do I also have to give them my passport? Or will it be the same process again, I have to get a letter? I am still working at my current school, so I need it for traveling purposes.

Sorry for all of the questions.

The school will help me apply for the new Z. I am just worried that I have to give my passport while I am still working and need it for traveling purposes within mainland.

If the process is easier and shorter because I'm already in the country with the Z type, that would be wonderful.

Dear, requirements are various in different places. Can In know where the new city is? In this case, I can find out if they need the original passport, its copy, or both of them.

The city is Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.

I am worried because the university is flying me out for the interview and signing of the contract. I still need to go back to Guangzhou to continue my work.

Johnny, it seems that you are not ready for having a new job currently. Am I right? Anyway, if you plan to change a job, you first should end your contract with your current employer. Then they will issue a release letter to you. Without this letter, your new employer is unable to help you get the new work permit and invitation letter issued by duly authorized Chinese unit. Without these two documents, you can't apply for the new Z type.

Hey Tim, actually I didn't know about that. I already told my current employer that I won't be renewing my contract with them. They never mentioned about giving me a release letter. All I know is, my contract ends January 5, and my Z type ends the 15th.

The other university is asking me to start working next semester, so it's sometime around end of February, early March. I assumed that because my contract is going to end and I apply for a new job, I didn't think the release letter was necessary.

I guess I will ask my school about that.

If you apply for the job and Z type after you finish your contract with your current school, then you needn't ask for the release letter. However, if you take the offer and let your new employer to deal with your work permit for Z type application now, then the release letter is a must.

Ok, I got it Tim, thanks. Does it take a long time to get a release letter?

Also, is there a possibility for the school to apply it for me after my contract date and I can leave the country and get the Z type in HK? Since I'm starting to think that I just need to give them a copy of my passport. That was the same process for Guangzhou when I was in the States. If no, I am fully well aware about having to leave the country and going back to the US.

But if they already apply it for me while I'm here, I am just wondering if it is possible after to get the Z type in HK. Probably not.

When I go this Friday, for my interview, I will figure everything out and ask my school for a release letter.

It does not take long to get a release letter. You can see whether you can get a new work permit and renew your residence permit within mainland PRC. If you can't do this, you need to go to HK or the US to apply for a Z type again.

Yup, that's what I'm thinking. I'm definitely going to try and get it renewed in mainland PRC. I think it should be fine.

Thanks again for the info!
