is medical exam required for z visa application?

Good day I am a canadian citizen living in the PhilippinesI called the Chinese embassy in Manila last week and the person on the phone told me that the medical exam for Z type( for Work) was no longer needed since 2013???Is that valid information, or a miss understanding?
