About:Visa Policy of China

Do I need a visa? If so, what type?

I'm a US citizen traveling to Hong Kong for 2 days, then Shanghai for 3-4 days. I work for a US university, who is hosting a conference in Shanghai.

Matt, I'm sure that you don't need the entry permit for HK. As for Shanghai, I'm considering you can make use of the 72-hour free transit policy if your flight route goes like this: US - HK - Shanghai - US. If you don't qualify for it, you can apply for an F type in advance.
