Visa requirement when visiting on a cruise ship

We are cruising with Princess next June [2016] which includes a one day visit to Shanghai and a two day visit to Beijing with an overnight stop on the ship. Princess advises we need a single entry- is this correct?

Jill, when you leave Shanghai, will you exit the border? If yes, I think you need a double-entry type.

Thanks Stephanie. Someone had told me that we won't actually leave Chinese water?? Will call the embassy when time gets closer. I just don't want to leave things until the last minute!

Jill, if you don't leave the water of PRC, a single entry will be enough.
