work permit to spousal residence permit

Hi

I'm working in Shanghai and am considering quitting my job. In the past, I had a spousal residence permit which was canceled when I received my work permit. How hard will it be to change my status again? Will I need to leave Shanghai and return to the States or will I be able to change my status within China?
