visiting friends in shanghai

Question

I'm French living in Japan. I would like to visit friends (French with Chinese resident permit) living in Shanghai, for one week. As I will stay at their home, do I need to apply to visa through qualified travel agency? If not, what could you require from my friends for me to get one single entry chinese entry permit?

Gougeon, I think it's no need to apply through a qualified travel agency, but you should double check this with the consular officers, as they hold different attitude to the citizens of different countries.  You can ask your friend to send you an invitation letter and a photocopy of his passport and residence permit to facilitate the application process.
