Do I need a visa if I want to fly into shanghai and leave on a cruise ship the next day?

If you make the transit within 24 hours, you don't need a visa. You can apply for a stay permit after arrival at the airport, and then board the cruise to leave SH. If it is beyond 24 hours, you need to apply for a visa in advance.
