Can they pretend they didn't get my parcel back so that they don't have to pay my refund

I sent item back to seller from AliExpress in China without a shipping number. Can they have received it but pretend that they haven't? Is this possible? i sent it via NZ post to the exact address provided. It has been nearly 40 days. Please help.
