If your Chinese friend can send you the invitation letter and a copy of his Chinese ID card, then you needn't book the air tickets and hotels. However, bank statement is still required. To be honest, there is no detaile requirement that how much money you should have in your account. You are required to provide the recent six months bank statement.

thank you for your response, Tim! if I cannot provide a bank statement for the past 6 months, will they honor an Incom Tax return form, or a certificate of employment from my company with an indicated hired date and salary information?

Yes, it's fine. The documents you mentioned are acceptable as financial standing proofs.
