I've just been on the phone with the Chinese Embassy in Brussels. They've informed me that the information on this webpage is not correct. With the 24 hour direct transit, you are not allowed to leave the airport to go to the train station.
You can only stay inside the airport and take another flight within 24 hours. With the 72 hour transit, you are allowed to leave the airport, but you have to leave China by the same airport withing 72 hours.

I don't think so. Under the 24 hour direct transit, you are allowed to leave the airport if you apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport. It's not required that you have to fly in and fly out from a same airport. You can take the train to Hong Kong.
