Visa Confusion. How can I apply for a S2 at the same time as my husband?

Hi! My husband may be traveling to Shanghai to work for 6 months. I am trying to see what it would take to go with him along with our little ones. I'm guessing we would need an S2 type, and if we are applying at the same time as my husband, how would that work? We were given the impression that having the family go is a difficult thing to do, as far as paperwork. Thank you for any help and advice you can give!
