Am I allowed to apply for the 72 hours visa?

I'm an airline employee working for United Airlines. I'm planning to fly standby from Amsterdam to Beijing, and then continue to Tokyo, on a confirmed ticket, within 72 hours.

Well, as you have a confirmed ticket from Beijing to Tokyo, I personally think you can make use of the 72-hour free transit policy as long as the airline allows you to board in. You can double check this with Beijing Airport Immigration by dialing 0086-10-56095400.
