Shanghai layover but via Kunming, does this count as a stop beforehand in another Chinese City?

I'm flying United Arab Emirates to New Zealand via Shanghai. I have a layover in Shanghai and want to see some sights. but my flight has a stop for refuelling in Kunming before Shanghai.
