Do I need travel Documents before i can get a Visa to travel to Mainland China?

Hi, I would like to travel to meet a Chinese Friend. I have a full time job in Australia but I may have some time off soon but do not have a definite date. I hoped to get one then book flights as soon as I know I have the time off. Is this possible to arrange?
