UK Citizen in USA who needs a visa for China!

Hello,
I am currently travelling and have been doing so for about 5 weeks. I find myself in San Antonio Texas and have plans to travel to PRC in about 5 weeks. I will not be returning to the UK before I fly. Am I able to apply in USA or does it have to be UK?
