About:Visa Policy of China

do we need a regular visa?

We plan traveling on US passports from Hong Kong to Hangzhou, return to HK for return to US. we plan to arrive Hangzhou Thursday September 24 noontime and depart September 26 around 2100 hours.

Yes, you need a regular entry permit. As you depart from Hong Kong to Hangzhou and then back to Hong Kong, the route is not eligible for using the 72-hour free transit policy.
