About:China Customs Declaration

Declaring more than $5,000 USD

Hi. If I travel through China with more than $5,000 USD, and declare it, does China tax you on the additional monies, or fine you for carrying more than $5,000 USD? And for "declaring it", what kind of process does that actually entail?

Jessie, according to the related regulation, passengers who bring more than 5000USD are required to declare. You need to fill the declaration form and then go through the red channel at the customs. The procedure isn't complicated.

If you really take more than 5000USD, then the customs officers decide how to deal with your money. It's possible that you might be fined.

Personally, I don't think it's wise to bring more than 5000USD cash. You can just bring your money in your debit card and then withdraw at the banks when you need. By the way, it is unsafe to bring too much cash.
