About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise including Shanghai

Please help. I fly to Shanghai arriving on 20th October. I then stay for 2 nights in a hotel there and join a cruise ship on 22nd. I then sail to the north coast of Japan. I arrive back to Shanghai on 27th and then sail again to the south coast of Japan arriving back in Shanghai on 3rd November. I stay one night and then fly back to the UK at 11am on 4th November. Do I need a visa and please tell me how I apply. Many thanks

Am I right that your travel is UK-Shanghai-Japan-Shanghai-Japan-Shanghai-UK and you have three entries to Shanghai? The 1st and 3rd could be covered by 24 or 144 hours transit without visa, but you definitely need a visa to travel Japan-Shanghai-Japan. So you might as well get a multiple-entry visa which will make things much easier all round. The details of how to apply are on this site.

If I have understood you properly, your detail itinerary is:

UK - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai - UK

As you can see, your itinerary is not eligible for visa free transit because of the segment:

Japan - Shanghai - Japan

This portion of your entire itinerary is not eligible for 24/144 hour visa free transit because this is considered as a visit to China and not as a transit.

Assuming that you are UK citizen, you should apply for a Chinese visa through one of Chinese Visa Application Service Centres (CVASC) that are located in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast. You will apply through them, present your itinerary, ask for multiple-entry, long term visa and pay the relevant fee. Just visit their relevant websites and you will realize that the procedure, although a bit boring is not so complicated.
