About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

can I travel from HK to Shanghai then back to Macau - is that qualified for 72 hours visa free?

Well, the route seems fine. However, there is a problem. You ca visit Macau and HK without any entry permit. Therefore, the immigration officers might suspect that you just make use of this route to avoid applying entry permit for mainland. Then you might be refused to make use of 72 hours free transit.

So I personally suggest you apply one for your Beijing visit in advance.
