I will be visiting the forbidden City between July 19 and 23.

Someone suggested that we (party of 4) hire a private guide to beat the crowd. How busy does it get and is it necessary to hire a guide?

Yes, it will be very crowded then and it is highly recommended to hire a tour guide on the spot. This way may not do well in beating the crowd, but the guide shall try hard to lead you to all must-sees and you can learn something. So you can have a close visit anyway instead of being pushed by crowds without gains.
