About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am flying from India, and then departing for the UK within 72 hours.

Are we allowed to leave the airport, book hotels, eat out, visit friends within Beijing etc?

Yes, you can do all the things you listed under the 72hrs free transit scheme.
