About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Can I have both a Chinese Spousal and Chinese Working Visa at the same time?

I am currently in China on a spousal type. I have just received a job offer to work in an international school. When I apply for my Chinese Z type and gets it approved, does this mean that my Chinese spousal type is no longer valid. If so, does this also mean that I cannot freely enter and exit China during the duration of my contract.

Hi there! It's true that you can't have both the Spousal type and working type at the same time. When you apply for the Z type, your spousal type will be invalidated. However, it doesn'y matter. You can just get a new residence permit with the Z type, and the residence permit allows you to enter and exit China freely during its validity.

Hi
I am just about to go to China. My husband got a job. I will come in on the Spousal S type but hope to get a job in a few months. By the sounds of your post this is possible to do in China.... I was not sure and even the Consulate in Australia was unsure. so I just have to apply for a Z type and then get a new Temp Residency again.

Thanks

It actually depends on local entry and exit management bureau. According to some other foreigners, those who have long-term resident permits have a great chance to change S1 into Z without leaving. Those who have short-term entry permits (L, M, X2, S2 etc) are required to go back to their countries to apply. Also the officers might grant or refuse according to the applicants' nationalities.

Therefore, you should visit local entry and exit management bureau in person and ask how they deal with this.
