About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I'd like to visit Xian. Travel from USA may have a two hour layover at TPE airport to get to XIY.

Am I eligible for the 72 hour free transit if I leave XIY to go to Taiwan? What happens if this is a problem?

So your route is USA-Taipei-Xian-Taiwan? If so, you are not qualified for 72 hours free transit. Then you should apply for a L type from Chinese consulate in advance.
