About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I am flying from Los Angeles to Shanghai for three days, then to Hong Kong on a separate ticket.

Yes, Hong Kong is considered as a third region, which makes your route eligible for using the 72-hour free transit policy.
