Residence Permit/Tourist Visa Question

My current residence permit expires on the 30th June. I have been told that it is easy to convert it into a 30 day tourist type, is this the case? If so, which documents do I need, how long does it take and when will the L type become active? I need to do this as I want to travel with some friends in China until the 15th July.

Hi David, it's easy to convert your residence permit into a 30-day tourist type. You'll need your passport, a photocopy of the passport, application form, recent photo, travel itinerary, return tickets, and hotel reservations. The process takes seven working days at most. The L type becomes valid from the date of its issuance.

Appreciate the help Jennifer. Tell me, what constitutes a travel itinerary document and what do you mean by return tickets? I'm going to travel Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai-Guangzhou-Hong Kong and fly back to the U.K. from Hong Kong. I have my hotel reservations printed and everything else that you mention.

A travel itinerary document generally describes your planned visit, places of visit, and sightseeing activities. Return ticket is the transportation ticket for you to return to your home country. Here, it refers to the flight ticket to UK.

The office have told me that they need an official letter from my school here (I'm an ESL teacher) "suggesting" that I should stay for another 30 days. My school have declined, as they say that they do not want to be "responsible" for me for these extra 30 days. I went back to the office today to confirm whether the letter is necessary for my application, they insist that it is. I'm very frustrated and confused, and am running out of time. Maybe I should just go to Hong Kong and get it done there.
