About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

can I fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and back for the day and use this option? I am a UK citizen.

Nope, you can't fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then back to Hong Kong because this route is not regarded as a transit. Perhaps you can choose to fly to Macau after you visit Guangzhou. By taking this route, it's possible to avail the free transit policy.
