72-hour visa exemption cruiseship to airport?

I am U.S. citizen, flying to Singapore to board Princess cruiseship. Cruiseship ends in Shanghai May 12, 2016. Plan to stay in Shanghai for 2 or 3 nights. Flying back to U.S. on May 14 or 15, 2016. Am I eligible for 72-hour China transit exemption?
