cambodia - guangzhou - shanghai - usa. do i need a visa for this trip?

What if I am flying from Siem Reap to Guangzhou, have 12 hour overnight layover in Guangzhou, then fly from Guangzhou to Shanghai Hongqiao and then Shanghai Pudong to USA after a 5 hour layover.

Bill, your situation isn't qualified for 72 hours free transit. However, if your total transit time (including your flight from GZ to SH) is less than 24 hours, then you needn't apply because you are qualified for 24 hours free transit. In this case, you just need to apply for a stay permit when you arrive in Guangzhou.
