Visa needed on US passport if traveling to Shenzhen from Hong Kong for less than 24 hours?

I have a US passport. I will be in Hong Kong for 8 days and would like to travel to Shenzhen for less than 24 hours. I will be returning to Hong Kong and flying home from there.
