About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Entering on S1 visa but planning to study - what resident permit do I need?

Hi - I am moving to Shanghai in August with my husband who has a confirmed teaching job there. The school is handling our entry permits and says I will have an S1 as his spouse. However I am planning to apply to study a long-term (non-degree) Chinese course at one of Shanghai's universities. Normally I believe this would require an X1 type. I assume either type is fine to enter the country but I'm not sure what type of resident permit I should then apply for? Is there a specific one for studying or can I just get one as a spouse and be eligible to study anyway? I'm aware I can't work without a work permit - is studying the same? Thanks! I'm very confused by it all :-/

Hi, Hilary! After you enter China on the S1 type, if you plan to study, you should change the S1 type into an X1 type and renew your residence permit. The process is troublesome. Therefor, I advise you to apply for the X1 type directly and then get the residence permit with this X1 type.

Thank you Russell. Does that mean though that if I stop studying after a year I will need to somehow revert back to S1? My husband's contract is two years. And do I have to leave the country to do this?

Yes, after the one-year study, you need to change the X1 type into an S1 type, but you don't have to leave the country. It can be changed at the Exit and Entry Administration within mainland China.
