how to get l visa when you are already here in china

I am an expat in China and I am married to a Chinese woman, I have a Z type but it will expire soon. I am not planning to to work at my company any more. I am not going to renew it. My wife told me that I should get an L type. Should I get it before my Z type expire or after my Z type expire? What are the requirements to get L type?

Wilson, how long do you plan to stay in China? If it's a comparatively long time, you can try to change the Z type into a Q type because your wife is a Chinese. If you just want to stay for a short time, you should ask you company cancel your work permit first. After it cancels your work permit, you can go to the local exit and entry bureau to cancel your residence permitand apply for a one-month L type. Of course, this process should be done before your Z type expires.
