Visa needed in Shanghai for 72 Hour Free Transit

I will be traveling with friends to Indonesia via Shanghai in August. We are getting our L types in Indonesia upon arrival therefore we will not have them upon entering China. We will have our confirmed onward tickets. Will we need to apply and plane tickets or will plane tickets alone suffice?

Jdmiller, I think you can enjoy 72 hours free transit in SH as long as you have valid US passport and onward air ticket.
