About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

i am British citizen who travelled to China on tourist visa but want to change my status to M type.

must i go back to the UK to change my status or can i go to a neighbouring country like Hong Kong or Macau or Singapore and get it changed?

Kaylay, it just depends on local entry and exit management bureau. If they say it's ok to apply for the M type without leaving, then you can change your L type into M without leaving. If they say no, then you should apply for M type abroad.

It's possible that you can apply for the M type in HK successfully.
