About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I buy a rt ticket from USA to stay in China for under 72 hours

I plan to fly from DFW TO Peking arriving October 22, 2pm leaving october 25 430 Pm. Is this allowable?

If you fly from the USA to Peking and then directly back to the USA, I'm afraid the itinerary is not qualified. You can take a layover in Hong Kong or Macau on your way back to make use of the transit policy.
