About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, the free transit visa from Hong Kong to Shanghai by ship

I would appreciate if anyone can clarify these questions.
I have US passport.

1. Flying from Los Angeles to Hong Kong as far as I know U.S. Citizens visiting HK for not more than three months/90 days are not required to obtain entry permits. correct?

2. Sailing a cruise From Hk to Shanghai, the ship is going to be only 8 hours in that port and then departs to Busan, South Korea. Can I qualify for the free transit?

I called to the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles today and they said that the 72 hours transit does not apply when you travel by ship, it is only when you head Shanghai to the airport.

Angelo, it's true that you are not qualified for 72 hours free transit. However, you still can enjoy 24 hours free transit at the port because you just transit 8 hours. If you plan to visit the city during your transit, then you should apply for a stay permit when passing the immigration counter.

They told me, even if I stay only 1 hour in Shanghai I still need an entry permit, basically they said the Exemption is only for people flying not sailing (ships).
