Can a student's (studying phd) wife get a job in china and convert her visa status to Z?

I will be leaving for PRC in a few days to start my Phd at the Syn Yat Sen University. I will be taking my wife with me. I checked online and it seems that I will have to file for the S1 tpe type for her. My question is will it be possible for her to work(if she can find a proper job- she is interested in teaching english) and then get a valid status to work in the country while I continue with my Phd?

Uzair, if she applies for the S1 type successfully, I think she has a chance to change S1 type to Z without leaving after she finds a job. But it still depends on local entry and exit mangement bureau. It's possible that they require your wife to exit PRC to apply for the Z type.

Please find a qualified employer who can assist her to apply for a work permit. Without this permit, she can't apply for the Z type anywhere.
