So you already have a study visa of China? Then you don't need any visa because of the transit. By the way, Sanya is part of China.

Thank you for your response. I understand Sanya is part of China but since the 30 day free visa states direct flights and I am catching a connection flight does this mean I need a student visa ?

If I understand it right, you don't have a student visa and you want to utilize the 30-day visa free access to travel to Hainan but the flights all have a layover in other cities of Mainland China. Then, you are not eligible for the 30-day access if you fail to buy a direct flight to Sanya airport, so you will need a China visa. As for the visa type, it depends on your purpose of travel. If you plan to study in China, then you need a student visa. If for sightseeing, then a tourist L visa.
