Tourist Visa for U.S. citizen

Hello, I am currently living and working in China but I will be traveling to Thailand when my work Z type expires on May 1. I want to take a TEFL course in Beijing from May 19-25 for my next job. As a U.S. citizen will I will be able to apply for and collect a Chinese L type while staying in Thailand?
