a day visit from a cruise ship. Do I still need a visa for Shanghai?

Did you mean that you just transit in Shanghai less than 24 hours? If so, you needn't apply one in advance because you enjoy 24 hours free transit. However, you should apply for a stay permit before you pass the immigration to enter Shanghai. It's for free.
