About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa? What must I do if anything to ensure that I am not doing anything illegal?

I am ending a cruise from America in Shanghai and have reservations to fly home the same day. I have reserved with the cruise line to take a shuttle directly to the airport for my return flight. I do have a valid American passport that expires in 2023.

Hey Virginia! What is your last stop before entering Shanghai? If it’s part of America, I’m afraid you can’t use the free transit policy because you depart and return to the same place and your route is not regarded as a valid transit. So you should apply for a G type entry permit in advance.
