Hi Pete! A Visa is an entry permit used for entering China. Both the passport and the entry permit are needed for your travel into PRC. The passport is issued by your country and shows your nationality, while the entry permit is issued by the Chinese embassy or consulate in the US to grant you a stay in China within a specified time limit.
