Do I need a visa to go to China to attend to a medical emergency

My brother is working in China and had a heart attack. Do I need an entry permit to go to China and attend to him and hopefully bring him back to the US?

Donald, you need it. If you have enough time, I suggest you to apply for an L type. The application process take about four working days. If you don't have enough time waiting the entry permit to be ready, you can ask the hospital to issue you a certificate and get contact with the Chinese immigration authorities, then apply for the emergent VOA.
