About:China Visa on Arrival

voa for Americans arriving in Shanghai by cruise ship, departing by air. We want a 72 hour visa.

What is the cost for such an entry permit, and is it possible? Can we be sure it would be available at the port in Shanghai where the cruise ends? We would be flying to New Zealand within the 72 hour time frame. Caroly Jones

The VOA is free, but I'm afraid you can't make use of the 72 hour free transit policy as it is only available at qualified airports. Can you tell me the exact stay duration in Shanghai? If it is not over than 24 hours, you can enjoy the 24 hour free transit.

If you are right, that is fabulous news, for I was told by a visa pro that cruise ship passengers will all have to purchase the regular one for $140. I could not believe this to be true. We can make sure to get airplane tickets that depart within 24 hours, and then we'd have a little time to have a look at Shanghai, which we have not seen since 1988, and we know it will be transformed. Shall we confirm this with an embassy? I'd hate to make a mistake. Thanks so much for answering. Caroly Jones
