How do I get help from the embassy and make sure they are safe and get the legal assistance. Can I hire the local lawyer to represent them?

I'm wondering why they are detained. Perhaps you can first go to the police office in Zhuhai to make sure they are in good condition. Then go to the Malaysia consulate in Guangzhou to ask for help. If your brother and friend had done improper things, I think they will not be released even though you hire a local lawer.
