Can I apply for a visa if my passport is going to expire in may?

Hi. i am an international student in Australia. My legal stay will expire in March 2015 so i have to apply for new one, but my passport is going to expire in May 2015. My question is, will I be able to get new one on this passport which will expire in May 2015?
