About:Chinese Marriage

Wondering who pays for wedding, if we should provide dowry and what sort of gifts are traditional.

Our American daughter will be marrying a Chinese man this summer in his hometown, where both of them now live and work. Only a few of our family and friends will be able to attend. The bride and groom are in their late 20s and are financially independent. We anticipate hosting (and paying for) a reception for them in the U.S. a year or so from now. I am wondering what share of the cost we should expect to pay for the wedding, banquet, etc. this year in China. I am also wondering if we are expected to provide a dowry or payment of some sort to the groom or his family. In addition, we are wondering about what gifts are considered appropriate from us for the bride and groom as well as for the groom's family and friends. We visited China two years ago and were amazed at the generosity of the people we met through my daughter. It seemed that everyone we met had a gift of some kind for us and some people traveled significant distances just to meet us and present us with gifts. I would like to be better prepared this time around.

Hey, take it easy. I’d like to share with you what I know about Chinese wedding for your reference:
You need to prepare dowry for the new couple. But the majority of the cost will be paid by the groom and his family. (They will give money for you to prepare the dowry in advance.)
For the cost of the wedding ceremony and the banquet, I’m not sure. There are some weddings that both sides share the fees; but there are also the others which the groom bears it only. It may also have something to do with the shares of the house & car purchasing. You’re suggested to discuss this with your daughter and the groom side.
For gifts for the groom and the bride, just ask what they like or what they need. For the groom’s family and friends, things with distinctive US character will be good, such as boutique coffee, arts, jewelry, perfume, or others.
