what visa do i need to visit Shanghai for 12 days on my own and not part of a group

Hi Ken! You need to apply for a tourist L type at the CVASC center in Australia. Documents you may be required to submit include your valid passport, a photocopy of the passport's bio data page, a completely filled application form glued with your recently taken photo, and roundtrip tickets and hotel reservations.
