i am traveling with a friend usa citizen to visit friends at the nz embassy.

Question

are we better off applying together at the Wellington embassy as we both have the same invitation letter? And can I nominate her to apply for an urgent visa on my behalf, if so how do I do this?

You can apply together at the Wellington embassy, perhaps it will be easier for the application. I guess your friend can submit the application for you, but I'm not sure. You should contact the embassy for confirmation.
